Waterloo Road BBC1, Wednesday, November 26, 8pm. Victoria Bush

Victoria Bush's School secretary Sonya often provides the fun factor in Waterloo Road. And with actress Laura Checkly, she's also half of comedy duo Checkly & Bush.  But Victoria admits trying to make people laugh is 'scary' and, at times, simply no laughing matter. "Our agent pushed and pushed to get us at the Comedy Store in London," Victoria tells the Weekly News. "They don't really do double acts or character acts, which we have, so we were fighting a losing battle from the start. "The only way they would take us was as part of their gong show, where three audience members have a gong.  "When all three have had enough and ring the gong, you're off. We lasted 46 seconds! Honestly, by the time we got and sorted ourselves out we were gonged off."  Sonya's frequently the light relief  in the school drama and she blunders into chaos this week. She decides to enter a short story competition , penning a tale that's a thinly veiled account of the former head--mistress boozing  --  only to see it accidentally printed on the back of PFA letters being sent out. "Sonya is a larger than life character and she's probably a bit marmite," admits Victoria.     "Some people will think she's brilliant and some will think: Oh her again, silly girl.  "The show deals with some heavy issues so she brings something a bit lighter. "She's had powerful stories too, like her mother having dementia."   Despite being a solid long -- running hit, the show was axed by the BBC and this series is all viewers will see before the bell rings for the last time. "We found out about the decision just before filming started again and there were a lot texts and calls," reveals Victoria, 36.  "Everyone was so sad. I was filming on the very last day and it was really difficult. "It was very emotional and I'm a bit of a a teary person so I scooted away early before I embarrassed myself.    "The cast and crew were like a family. "The hours are so intense It's as if you are leading a double life and It's a shock when It's all over. It's never nice when you lose your job but because we knew what was happening, I think we were at least able to give the show a proper send off.  Victoria has had more to smile about recently, having got married just last month.  "It was a brilliant wedding," she adds.  "We had about 170 guests so it was like a military operation. My mum became like bridezilla's mum!"
