Kathy Kirby

She was the blonde bombshell with the voice of an angel, and an English author hopes to finally make Kathy Kirby recognised as the Most Glamorous British Star of the 1960s.   Mark Willerton first met Kathy in 1981, when he was persuaded to go to her concert by a friend--reluctantly he went along, only to be blown away by her star quality.   Mark became one Kathy's closest friends and confidantes for 30 years, and he hopes his new biography of this enigmatic lady will finally set the record straight.    "When she persuaded a manager to let her sing a song, the crowd reaction was so good that he went straight to Kathy's parents house and asked if she could join a tour immediately," recalls Mark, in his first British Newspaper interview.         "So right from the start, Kathy thought the man, Bert Ambrose, was wonderful -- she was just 17, he 59, but they began an affair.  "A renowned band leader from the 1930s, Ambrose would go on to make some disastrous decisions, that badly affected her career.   "She looked a bit like Marilyn Monroe, and Kathy was hugely popular in Britain. "She'd later have her own BBC TV show, be named Top Female Singer in 1963, When Cliff Richard was top male singer, and I think her fame should have lasted much longer.  "Unfortunately, at that time, the new bands like the Beatles were coming in, and young singers like Sandy Shaw and Cilla Black were wearing the new fashions and Kath'ys image began to look a bit dated.   "She did meet Mary Quant, and tried to dress in the new styles, but her loyal fans didn't like that and she stuck with her old image.   "There were rumours of an affair with Tom Jones, which both denied, and she did have an affair with Bruce Forsyth, but she should be remembered for her incredible stage performance  ---  I found it unbelievable, and we soon became friends"     Mark, in fact grew so close to Kirby that he even helped her patch things up with sister after Kathy went through mental illness and bankruptcy.   "After Kathy's health scare in 2005, I realised she needed her family back and i asked for help" says Mark.   Kathy was touched that someone had cared enough, and they sent her money and refurbished her flat.  "I feel very strongly that Kathy could and should have been a bigger star for much longer. and I hope this book will set things straight.    "When, I tracked down people who'd known her in her heyday, I was struck by how fond they were of her. In fact, I got so excited when given the phone number of Frank Ifield in Australia,  I phoned him at 2 in the morning! "To my amazement, he happily spoke about Kathy right away, which shows how highly regarded she was.   "She did the Royal Variety Show, she sang for Britain in the Eurovision Song Contest, she was right up there with Dusty, Cilla and Sandie ---  But Kathy should have been so much more. Kathy died last year aged 72.  the real Kathy Kirby: No Secret Anymore by Mark Willerton is out now.
